Gerry can you help me write of a description that explains what this chart means in layman’s terms?

Greetings: The NEHGS referred me to your site. I had inquired of them how I can best determine if my family has a lineage connection the Adams Family. My father and I are both Francis Adams Brooks (he’s Jr., I am the III), but we are both called by our nicknames, Bud. My dad was born in Worcester and grew up in Braintree and Pembroke after moving from Worcester. We’ve long heard that we were related to Adams, but was not sure of the connection. We are very certain that the connection is going to be upstream from Adams, and then down another line, but not sure how to research that. How can you all help, please? Thank you.

  The research on AdamsFamilyDNA.com ties the families together with yDNA results – but as a Brooks you can’t use your yDNA because it is Brooks yDNA not Adams yDNA. yDNA travels on a strand of DNA that goes from father to son to his son and so on and the surname must be unbroken. So in order to use yDNA to help you, you will need to find a Adams relative that you are 100% certain you are related to who has an unbroaken line to that know relative. And then, they can take the test, at that point you will know which of the 100s of Adams clusters you belong to.

  And, btw, every Adams on the planet has an oral family history of being related to the presidential line but only a very small percentage actually are. That is what I was told about my mothers Adams family but it turned out not to be so when we tested my Uncle.
